Bangor Savings Bank ATM Kiosk

Portland, Maine (Summer 2011)

24/7 Compact Urban Infill.  The Bangor Savings Bank needed to establish an ATM presence in Portland’s Old Port District and turned to ALPHAarchitects to design and guide the project efficiently through Portland’s complex planning and permit process.  All goals were achieved in this modern and efficient 24/7 banking kiosk.

Dream Home – If I Lived Here

“The house I lived in for almost 30 years was rustic and rough and built by hand. Literally. It had wide Pine floorboards and beams we dismantled from an old Aroostook County Barn, its bones still strong and resilient although its cedar shingles had given out long ago.”
“If I were asked to pull out the crayons and color that first home, I would use all the brown shades – Tan, Almond, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Mahogany, Chestnut and all of them speak of Earth and toasted bread to me.”
“But this house is not toast or earth. It is steel cables and an open staircase that weaves up through the center of the house to a skylight, interconnecting one floor to another, pulling the light into a perfect puzzle of movement…”

Shaw Residence

Woodstock, Maine (2010)

This weekend ski home exerts continuity from its interior spaces to the sight of the White Mountains. The design of this house maximizes stunning views of Mount Washington, Mount Abraham, etc, with a steeply sloping site and an edge drop-off. This new residence located in Maine’s Western Mountains has 2,450 SF and 2 stories, which includes 3 bedrooms, and 3 baths. The residence has a central raised fire place built in Rumford Style with a blue stone hearth. It has both active (with water and photovoltaic) and passive (through the windows) solar energy sources. This residence has radiant slab hydronic heating which is preheated with solar hot water. The ornate cupola that adds to the silhouette of the building is operable and naturally ventilates the house, with the help of a whole house fan. The living spaces outside consists of recycled decking material with stainless steel guardrail. The roof on the south side was also extended four feet past the house to provide passive summer shading while allowing deep sun penetration during the winter.

NYC Retail

New York City, New York (Summer 2011)

In the heart of New York City, this project included three building retail upgrades and facelifts in the blighted city area. These projects are located on Madison and Columbus Avenues. Upgrades include elimination of roll-up grille storefronts for new bright retail marketplace with stainless steel awnings and canopies, vandal resistant glass, new building lighting, custom signage, etc.

Bangor Savings Plaza

Falmouth, Maine (Summer 2011)

This adaptive reuse project occupies 15,400 SF. The new Bangor Savings Plaza radiates with sail-like vestibules at each business entrance. Large, unobstructed panes of new metal panels, aluminum storefronts, and curved metal canopies were employed for a welcoming presence to the customers. It is located in the Village Center Overlay District and faces US Route One at an angle. Tenants include Bangor Savings Bank & Ace Hardware.

Tate House Museum

Portland, Maine

The Tate House Museum is a part of Maine’s Colonial History. Tate House was built in 1755 for Captain George Tate (1700-1794) and his family, which had recently arrived in the Colonies from Britain. Mark Sengelmann, R.A. is providing architectural insights and advice as the Chairman of Building Committee. The extent of the renovation and rehabilitation of the building includes radial sawn siding replacement, drainage remediation, and masonry restoration. The committee has also acquired two large wheels twelve feet in diameter and weighing 1,000 pounds each, that were once part of the logging history during this time period. The big wheels will be part of the exhibit for the educational tours of the Tate House Museum.

Winfield Children’s House – A Montessori School

Freeport, Maine (2000, 2007)

Addition to 1850’s School House with a 2.5 Acre Campus Expansion. This was a remodel of administration and classroom building, an expanded playground and new shed. This building includes Bio Detention Wild Flower Garden. The office area includes 2,000 SF and the children’s house has 2,060 SF.

The District

Portland, Maine (2010)

Adding to the emergent Old Port District’s up-and-coming urban lifestyle, The District is a new neighborhood pub and restaurant located on Danforth Street. This venue includes 1,768 SF on the first floor and 1800 sf on the second floor.  Visual continuity is achieved with seating in the second floor dining space that overlooks into the first floor bar and into the open kitchen. This restaurant has a custom 40’ mahogany bar with hardwood flooring that brings both warmth and style to the space.

Southern Maine Motors

Saco, Maine (Winter 2012)

This is taking the existing Chrysler Auto Group dealership and designing a facelift while rebranding the facility. The first floor includes 15,000 SF; the second floor has 7,200, with a total of 22,200 SF. Premium upgrades include application of Chrysler Arch, two story showroom, customer service area, new vehicle delivery canopy and outdoor branded studio. The overall image of the building has been upgraded from a dated gambrel roofed structure to a modern machine-like building for selling and servicing Chrysler vehicles. This complex project will remain fully operational during construction.
